Best Southern Banana Cobbler

A nostalgic Southern dessert featuring caramelized bananas in a buttery cobbler base, perfect for family gatherings.

  • 5 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Caramel drizzle (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Mash the ripe bananas in a large bowl until smooth but with some chunks remaining.
  4. Mix in the granulated sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Fold in the self-rising flour followed by the whole milk, being careful not to over mix.
  6. Pour the batter into your greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  7. Pop the baking dish into the oven and bake for about 30–35 minutes.
  8. Cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel.
