Mongolian Beef

A comforting and flavorful Mongolian Beef dish that’s easy to make for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the beef: Start by thinly slicing the flank steak against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Coat the beef: In a bowl, toss the sliced beef with cornstarch until every piece is coated.
  3. Heat the oil: In a large skillet or wok, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  4. Sear the beef: Add the beef in batches, cooking for about 2–3 minutes per side until browned, then set aside.
  5. Sauté the aromatics: In the same skillet, add the green onions and garlic, stirring for about a minute until fragrant.
  6. Make the sauce: Pour in the soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and water. Stir and let simmer for a few minutes.
  7. Combine everything: Return the beef to the skillet, toss to coat in the sauce, and cook until heated through.
  8. Final touches: If using, add red pepper flakes and stir to combine before removing from heat.

Notes

Serve over rice or quinoa, and add steamed vegetables for balance. Customize with your favorite add-ins like cashews or veggies.
