  • ¼ cup butter
  • 8 cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them thinly.
  3. Mix the sliced apples with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt in a large bowl. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  4. Roll out your pie crust to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  5. Assemble the pie by placing the bottom crust in a greased pie dish, adding the apple filling, and dotting with butter bits.
  6. Top the pie with the rolled out top crust; crimp edges to seal.
  7. The egg wash: Beat the egg with water and brush it over the top crust.
  8. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes.
  9. Cool the pie for at least 2 hours before slicing.
