Southern Caramel Cake

A deliciously moist cake draped in luscious caramel frosting, perfect for any gathering and rich in nostalgic flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227g) salted butter (softened)
  • 2 1/2 cups (500g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (423g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup (227g) salted butter (cubed, for frosting)
  • 3 3/4 cups (750g) granulated sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 (12-ounce) cans evaporated milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream the butter and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, ensuring each one is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and milk.
  5. Divide the batter among the three prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cake layers in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  8. Make the caramel frosting by melting cubed butter and mixing in sugar and evaporated milk in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until boiling and then simmering for 10-12 minutes.
  9. Assemble the cake layers with caramel frosting in between and around the outside until fully coated.

Notes

For a lighter frosting, you can use half butter and half cream cheese. This cake pairs beautifully with coffee or sweet tea.
