French Onion Soup

A comforting classic French onion soup with caramelized onions, savory broth, and a melty layer of Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

  • 6 large Onions
  • 8 cups Beef broth
  • 1 Baguette
  • 2 cups Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 cup Dry white wine
  • A few sprigs Fresh thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions thinly.
  2. Melt the butter over medium heat and cook the onions for about 30 minutes until soft and golden brown.
  3. Stir in the fresh thyme, salt, and pepper, then add the dry white wine to deglaze the pot.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and let it simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  5. Preheat your oven to broil. Slice the baguette and toast on a baking sheet until golden.
  6. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted baguette, and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  7. Broil the bowls for 2-5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
