Ultimate French Onion Soup

A comforting classic French Onion Soup that warms the soul with its rich flavor and cheesy goodness.

  • 3 large Onions
  • 4 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 loaf Baguette
  • 1 to 2 cups Gruyère Cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or Olive Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 pinch Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions by halving them from top to bottom and slicing into thin crescent-shaped pieces.
  2. Caramelize the onions in a large pot over medium heat with butter or olive oil, stirring often for about 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Season the caramelized onions with salt, black pepper, and sugar for extra sweetness.
  4. Add the beef broth and bring to a gentle simmer, this will deepen the flavor. Simmer for another 15-20 minutes.
  5. Prepare the baguette by slicing it into 1-inch thick rounds and toasting until golden brown.
  6. Grate the Gruyère cheese for better melting.
  7. Assemble the soup by ladling it into oven-safe bowls, topping with baguette slices and a generous amount of Gruyère cheese.
  8. Broil the assembled soup bowls for about 2-3 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

Notes

Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with a side salad. Experiment with herbs and different types of cheese for unique flavors.
