Southern Style Goulash

A comforting and flavorful Southern goulash that brings warmth to your table on chilly days, perfect for family gatherings or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the aromatics: Heat your olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Toss in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.
  2. Brown the beef: Add the ground beef to the pot. Using a wooden spoon, break it up and brown until fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Mix in the pasta and spice it up: Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until combined and bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Let it simmer: Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender.
  5. Finalize the dish: Check the pasta for doneness, adding more beef broth if needed. Stir in shredded cheddar if desired, letting it melt into the goulash.
  6. Plate and garnish: Ladle the goulash into bowls, garnish with fresh chopped parsley, and add extra cheese if desired.

Notes
